PUBLISHED WORDS
I spent most of my time and energy writing fiction, much to the surprise of my mother. Repeatedly she would say, "Why are you making stuff up when you're real life has been so crazy?"
In 2014, I decided to take her advice and write some essays for The Good Men Project. I hope to get back to doing it again as I found the act of writing about my personal journey to be both cathartic and terrifying.
Here's a brief introduction to my published stories. The titles are links to the full articles on The Good Men Project website.
How To Say Hello
Though we lived in the same town, I didn't meet my father until I was 35. However, on occasion we would cross paths, including this story of the unexpected "gifts" of attending a Christmas party where I ran into the father and brother I didn't know.
Being One of the Lean In Men
Bored at work with my boss out of town, I read a copy of Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In that she had on her desk. What started as mild curiosity became the startling realization of much of my own personal struggle was being addressed in the book.
Building Blocks and Band-Aids
At 35, I had dinner with my father and his wife. Until that night, I had spent my entire life wondering what it would be like to know him. This was the start of me finding out.
Why Parenthood is the Manliest Show On Television
NBC's Parenthood is one of my favorite shows to air on any network in recent years. The family drama is a genre that seems to be fading away and I think that's sad. Here, I share my thoughts on this important and often overlooked show.
The Unexpected Struggle of Being an Ex-Step-Dad
I always wanted to be a dad and, for a few years, I had the great privilege of being a step-father. Years after the end of that relationship, there's still a beautiful heartache in knowing that chapter of my life is over.
The Moment I Became a Grown-Up
Though I didn't officially know my father until I was 35, at 18 I was tired of spending my entire ignored by him so I introduced myself to him at a writer's workshop where he was one of the guest speakers.
When Young Hearts and AIDS Collide
Seeing HBO's The Normal Heart inspired me to write about my own experience with HIV when the first man I loved turned out to be positive.
